Kiri Te Kanawa, Renée Fleming, Natalie Dessay, José Carreras, Thomas Hampson, Bryn Terfel. But as the named artists – and by far not only them – have accomplished in recent decades with their stage and recording projects, the musical definitely deserves its place in the sun. Finally, classical Broadway musical theaters such as George Gershwin, Jerome Kern, Irving Berlin, Cole Porter and Richard Rodgers have long since earned their place in history alongside the great composers of symphonies and famous operas. In addition, many of the musical titles of Kurt Weill, Stephen Sondheim, and Leonard Bernstein commonly include opera in their repertoire, because they simply belong here due to their qualities. So – why not go to Broadway in the classic packaging with us?

One of our few successful opera singers in the world, bass baritone Adam Plachetka, has been attracted to musicals for a long time. Therefore, when he released a CD entitled “Impossible Dream” in 2017, accompanied by the Czech Radio Symphony Orchestra and conductor Tomáš Netopil, he sang the greatest Broadway hits of the 1950s and 1960s, he easily convinced even very skeptical listeners that he had the style and style. with its natural nature really close. The recording and its concert appearance at the Karlín Forum in Prague were a well-deserved success, so it was only a matter of time before Adam Plachetka would return to the imaginary Broadway. And it will happen soon. On April 22, 2022, the perpetrators – or the singer together with the radio orchestra – will return to the scene to ceremoniously introduce another musical CD during the concert “On Broadway with Adam Palchetka II”. This time the conductor will be Robert Jindra, and visitors can look forward to more songs from the works of creators working in the world of musical theater from the 1920s to the present.

The oldest generation of Broadway composers will be represented by Nacio Herb Brown. His name may not be familiar to many rock fans of the genre, although they certainly know his most famous song well. The hit “Singing in the Rain” dates from 1929, and as evidenced, for example, by its Czech version with lyrics by Jiří Voskovec and Jan Werich, conquered the world long before the Second World War. However, his immortality was ensured by the film of the same name from 1952 with unforgettable dance creations by Gen Kelly. The concert will feature not only an iconic song, but also another song “Make ´em Laugh” and a prelude to a film musical, which, like all other musical numbers in this concert, was instrumented by Lukáš Sommer. The overture from Kiss me, Kate from 1948 reminds of the legendary Cola Porter, and to his favorite Richard Rodgers, who was given the most space on the previous CD, Adam Plachetka will return in the songs “Something Wonderful” from the musical The King and I from 1951 and “Edelweiss” from The Sound of Music from 1959. Famous titles of the 1950s include, of course, Frederick Loewe’s My Fair Lady (1956), represented at the concert by the overture and the song “With a Little Bit of Luck”, and The Music Man ( 1957) Meredith Wilson, famous for the “Seventy-Six Trombones” hit.

The 1960s are associated with the conservatively tuned title of Hello Dolly by Jerry Herrman from 1964, which recalls the overture, while in 1970 comes one of the first rock operas, Jesus Christ Superstar by Andrew Lloyd Webber. Adam Plachetka chose the songs “Pilate’s Dream” and “Herod’s Song”. Only a year later, the musical Case of Wary Casey Warren, who knows our audience under the name Pomade, especially from his film version from 1978, saw the light of day. Witnesses will certainly remember the song “Beauty School Dropout”. Another musical phenomenon was born in Europe and Paris, respectively, where Les Misérables Claude Michael Schonberg had their premiere in 1980. From them we will hear the famous performance “Master of the House”. Another author’s title is Miss Saigon (1989) with the song “Bui Doi”. Tanz der Vampire (1997) by Jim Steinman and Michael Kunze is also a notable European musical. Adam Plachetka will switch from English to German in the songs “Gott ist tot” and “Unstillbare Gier”. The singer will return to the film musical in Alan Meneken’s “Evermore” from the film “Beauty and the Beast” from 1991. The concert will be closed by two songs from works from the turn of the millennium: “This is the Moment” by Frank Wildorn from “Jekyll and Hyde” (1997 ) and “You Won’t Succed on Bradway” by John Du Prez and Eric Idle (2005).
